Why someone registers a domain that looks like yours
It is almost never about the website. The valuable part is the email. Once somebody owns a domain one letter off yours, they can send an invoice that looks like it came from your accounts department, or a password reset that looks like it came from your helpdesk. Your customer checks the sender address, sees something close enough, and pays.
That is why this check pays most attention to whether a lookalike can receive mail. A domain sitting empty is worth knowing about. A domain with a mail server pointed at it is worth dealing with today.
What we look for
Missing and doubled letters
The plain typo. Someone drops a letter or hits a key twice, and a registered domain is waiting for them.
Your name plus a word
Names like yourbusiness-billing.com or secure-yourbusiness.com. This is the shape most phishing domains take, and it is not a typo at all.
A different ending
The same name on .co, .net, .online or one of the cheap new endings that carry most of the abuse.
Letters that only look right
Characters from other alphabets that render as Latin letters. Nobody types those by accident, so a registration is always deliberate.
What this tool does not do
It reads public DNS, public registry records and public certificate logs. It does not visit the other domains, scan them, or interact with them in any way. A domain we report is a domain somebody registered, which is a fact. Whether they registered it to defraud your customers is a judgement, and we give you the evidence rather than the verdict.
We also cannot take a domain down, and neither can anyone who tells you they can do it cheaply. Getting a domain suspended means a complaint to its registrar with evidence attached, or a UDRP filing. What we can do is find it and hand you the evidence.
